SPRING EQUINOX
On Wednesday 20 March 2019 at 23.58 the Sun enters the sign of Aries, starting a new cycle. It is the time of the spring equinox. It is the change of season from winter to spring.
The equinoxes occur twice a year. In March and September, and they are characterised by the fact that day and night are exactly the same length, except at the poles.
The word equinox comes from the Latin ‘aequinoctium’ which means ‘same night’.
And it is precisely at this time, because of its symbolism in balancing night and day, that rituals of all kinds have been practiced since ancient times, especially those related to fertility and love. In parallel with the earth that emerges after the winter’s rest, ready to blossom and give life everywhere.
This equinox is also called ‘the first point of Aries’ as it happens just as the sun enters the sign of Aries and is therefore impregnated with its strength, fire, drive and enthusiasm; which also makes these days very suitable for undertaking new things.
Under the influence of Celtic culture, the full moon of the equinox was celebrated as the festival of OSTARA. And Catholics celebrate Easter – Holy Week – on the first Sunday after the full moon. In fact, this is why Holy Week falls on different days every year.
It is therefore, and at all levels, an ideal day to do all kinds of work and rituals for all that we want to grow and prosper.
If you feel like it, you can make this magic bouquet:
Form little branches with fresh spices tied with a rope to which you will make seven knots. In each of those knots, pronounce a wish. And then place them scattered around your house or business.
Mint, oregano and sage will be a call for prosperity.
Basil will bring peace.
Verbena ensures health.
Cinnamon branches – in odd numbers – will attract love and passion.
OSTARA:
On this holiday, the Celts honored the goddess of spring, EOSTRE. Symbols of this celebration include spring flowers, chicks, rabbits and coloured eggs. OSTARA always marks the beginning of a time of growth and expansion.
If time allows, open the windows and doors of your home or business, to help renew energies. The house is also often decorated with pots of daffodils and tulips. And if you have a special wish, write it down on a piece of paper and bury it in the soil of the new pots or in the soil of your garden.
Then light a pale green candle as a tribute to the rising mother earth.
